The Friends of the Harris Museum & Art Gallery was formed in 1973 to help support the museum and its work. In the early days the Friends helped to run the Museum’s café and shop. Income from this and from membership fees was invested to enable the Friends to begin funding museum projects.
Over the years the Friends have funded numerous museum purchases and conservations, including some of the best known works in the museum collections, such as The Sudden Rising of the Nile and The Du Cane Triptych by Arthur Devis. Funding from the Friends has often enabled the museum to secure large scale grants from organisations such as the Heritage Lottery Fund, National Heritage Memorial Fund and The Art Fund through showing local support for purchases and other museum activities.
In 2010, led by Chair Greta Krypczyk-Oddy, the Friends have relaunched their benefits programme for members, developed a new activities and events programme and created a range of new marketing materials to encourage new members to get involved.
