Preventative conservation, caring for objects
Object Identification
The museum has members of staff who have specialist knowledge about the objects and pictures that we have in the museum. If you have something similar and you would like to find out more about its history, or need advice about conservation, we can try to help you. If your object falls outside our areas of specialism, we will try to suggest alternative sources of information. The service we offer is free, but is strictly by appointment only. You will need to speak to the person responsible for the type of object you are inquiring about (see above).
Valuations
Please note that we are not able to give valuations.
The people you see giving valuations of objects on television programmes like Antiques Roadshow are from auction houses, not museums.
Donations
The Harris Museum and Art Gallery is always very grateful when people offer us items for our collection. We appreciate their generosity and their interest in the museum. We always consider every offer very carefully but, because we are offered items almost every day, we are only able to accept a very small percentage of potential donations.
We consider every offer by asking ourselves:
• Does this item fill a gap in our collection?
• Is the item in good condition?
• Does it help us tell the story of the people of Preston?
• Is it appropriate to our museum or would it be better placed in another institution?
We have three Keepers who are responsible for deciding what items are added to the museum’s collection. You will need to speak to the person responsible for the type of item you would like to donate (see above). Please do not bring the item into the museum without discussing it with us first.
Bequests
Some people consider leaving items to the museum in their will. As with other types of donation, this needs to be discussed with the relevant member of staff first. Written confirmation from the museum accepting the bequest is needed before it is written into the will. Otherwise, the museum has no legal obligation to accept the bequest.
