15 January – 5 March 2011
Producing big, bold textiles in eye-popping colours, Hull Traders was a post-war design company based in Lancashire, which specialised in pop-tastic fabrics and furniture. Shirley Craven was the company’s leading designer and her abstract designs capture the exuberance of the swinging sixties.
Other famous artists who designed for Hull Traders include Eduardo Paolozzi, Ivon Hitchens and Althea McNish, Britain’s first and most distinguished textile designer of Afro-Caribbean descent.
This exhibition is the first retrospective of Hull Traders. It is a Hull Museums Exhibition and is curated by leading design historian Lesley Jackson, author of Shirley Craven and Hull Traders - Revolutionary Fabrics and Furniture 1957-1980.
