The fine art collection contains paintings, drawings and watercolours, prints, photographs and sculpture. Most of this collection is displayed in Galleries 5, 6 and 7 and on the balconies and stairways. One of the collection's main strengths is a group of paintings by the Preston-based Devis family. There is always a large number of 19th century oil paintings on display. This group contains some of the Harris' most popular images, such as In the Bey's Garden by John Frederick Lewis (1805-1876) and In the Golden Olden Time, by John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893).
The collection also has a rich 20th century aspect, including work by Andre Derain, Jack Butler Yeats, Ivon Hitchens, Stanley Spencer and Graham Sutherland.
Our large collection of works on paper includes watercolours by JMW Turner and Samuel Palmer, drawings by Guido Reni and Henry Fuseli, and prints by William Blake and Thomas Rowlandson. Special exhibitions drawn from this collection are regularly on display in Gallery 4 (upper).
