Talking on Corners, Speaking in Tongues is an exhibition of work by the unapologetically political painter from Zanzibar, Lubaina Himid. Through her vivid paintings and installations, Lubaina explores the subtleties of personal stories, histories, memories and ambitions.
The exhibition includes both new and existing works which have been specially interwoven to mark the bicentenary of the passing of the act of parliament to abolish enslavement in Britain. One of the highlights of the show is Naming the Money, (2004/2007) - a warm and colourful installation of 35 life-size African figures.
An invoice on the back of each figure states their name, says who they really are and what they used to do, along with their new enforced names and occupations as enslaved servants.
Lubaina Himid is currently Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire. She has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. Many of the works on display will be for sale.
