Technophobia is a solo exhibition by one of the UK’s most exciting young contemporary artists. Gordon Cheung creates vast, dream-like worlds that draw the viewer in. The paintings are huge in both scale and impact, depicting a vision of contemporary culture. These remarkable images are part psychedelia and science fiction, part Romanticism and traditional Chinese painting.
Visually his works remind us of a kind of Utopia, with imagery of nature, rainbows, sunsets, waterfalls - whilst underlying themes highlight the perils of the modern world. Cheung reflects on issues such as slavery to profit, the war on terror, religion, globalisation, the digital age and technology.
Computer generated images, photography, spray paint, oil, acrylic, ink, and stock listings from the Financial Times collide to create the works. Cheung uses this mixed media to layer and build large-scale canvases, the largest at 4.5 metres wide.
Half British, half Chinese, Cheung grew up in 70’s and 80’s London, absorbing both cultures. He studied at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2001. He currently lives and works in London, and exhibits internationally.
