21st June 2008 – 30th May 2009
1st floor - Mezzanine Gallery
If you thought that Friargate was just another Preston street then think again – the history of this bustling thoroughfare reveals an intriguing tale of people and events.
Friargate represents a series of first’s for the city – Preston’s first fish and chip shop, Indian restaurant, Catholic church, first prison to name but a few. Did you know that its name is linked to a Franciscan monastery founded there in the 1200s, or that you could catch an amazing show at the popular Hippodrome theatre until 1957?
Using photography, archaeology, art and social history objects, Footsteps down Friargate explores why this street is so significant to Preston’s present and past.
Come and share what Friargate means to you – you’ll be able to tell us your own memories of Preston’s oldest commercial street in the exhibition.
