Stephen Siwiak’s artwork focuses on the human form and specifically on the human head. However, he does not see the drawings he makes as portraits. Siwiak agrees with Gerhard Richter’s statement, `I don’t think the painter need see or know his sitter. A portrait must not express anything of the sitter’s soul, essence and character.’ This helps to explain why Siwiak uses such an emotive motif for his work and then chooses to dismiss the subjective facets of portraiture. Siwiak’s work is made up of opposing elements, both conflicting and contradictory.
