Martin Creed is one of the most influential and exciting British artists today, who uses sculpture, neon, painting, video and performance. Awarded the Turner Prize in 2001, he was also chosen to welcome the 2012 London Olympics with a UK-wide bell-ringing performance, from Big Ben to bicycle bells.

 

The exhibition includes Work No. 203: EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT (1999) on the front of the Grade 1 listed Harris building.

The Birley Residency Open Day

Special Event with Preston-based professional artists

Drop into the Harris Museum to meet artists from The Birley artist studios in Preston and talk to them about their work.  There will be peformances by Martin Hamblen, Tao Lashley-Burnley and Rachel Pursglove and a talk by Benedict Rutherford.  New video work by Mat Birchall will be on display all day and you can take part in artist's boardgames by Steph Fletcher.

Maeve Rendle takes fragments of a monologue from Chekhov's play
The Seagull to create a new, looping script that resonates powerfully with the present.  This is a unique chance to experience this brand new work in the museum's breathtaking atrium.

René Magritte, (1898 -1967) and Paul Delvaux, (1897 - 1994) are the most celebrated of the Belgian Surrealists. This is a rare chance to see Delvaux's The Call of the Night painted in 1938 and Magritte's Threatening Weather painted in 1929 and now on loan from the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
