Harris Museum & Art Gallery announced as a finalist in Lancashire Green Awards 2012

Discover Preston gallery

The finalists in the Lancashire Green Awards were announced in the Lancashire Evening Post last week and the Harris Museum & Art Gallery is one of the finalists in the Green Tourism category.

Being a large Grade 1 Victorian building provides a real green challenge, but we continually search for ways to reduce our carbon footprint and minimise our use of resources.

We have succeeded in significantly reducing our electricity consumption throughout the building and our recently opened Discover Preston gallery was designed to reduce its carbon footprint even though it requires strict environmental conditions to protect the objects featured.

Visitors will soon be able to take part in an activity in the gallery based on the museum’s 18th century Chorley Family portrait, comparing their carbon footprint to that of the 1700s.

Our café sources its food locally (including well-known producers such as Wallings Ice Cream from Cockerham, Williams biscuits, Preston and Lathams of Broughton).

The Awards will be announced on 15 November.
